Get DYLAN AND JEN for free at Amazon between January 1st and 3rd.

Don't miss your chance!

Dylan and Jen: a My Once and Future Love Revisited story

Dylan is the bassist for Jake Lindsey’s band, but not when he’s in his hometown. It’s Christmas Eve and a sudden, strong blizzard has left the mountain submerged in snow, wrecking his plan to drive back to Los Angeles in time to attend Jake and Beth’s party Christmas Day.
Jennifer’s family was coming to spend the holiday at her cabin, but the storm is keeping them off the mountain. Resigned to entertaining herself for the night, she’s startled by someone pounding on her front door—a handsome man needing shelter from the storm. Dylan is sweet, funny, and so damn hot she can’t resist learning what he has to offer.
Was this a single night of passion, or the beginning of lasting love?

For supernatural detectives Thulu and La Fi, “normal” is a relative term. La Fi is a medium, Thulu is a finder, and their usual clients are already dead.

But when their friend Reo is shot, and a group of stranded angels show up at their house for help to find a missing child, things are striking too close to home.

And now the portals that let the magical races return to Earth have started opening on their own.

With trips off-world, a kidnapped psychic and changes to their own abilities, Thulu and La Fi are hit with a lot more than they usually handle. Of course, their magical friends are there to help, but even they may not be enough to save an increasingly unstable Earth.

Portals is the sequel to Relics and is Book 2 in The Thulukan Chronicles.

Excerpt from Portals

That night Parker had popped in to wake us at two in the morning to tell us our best friend, Reo, had been shot. The young ghost was distraught and panicked.

“They're on the back porch! You have to go help.”

“Where is he?” I asked groggily, as I jumped out of bed.

Thulu was instantly awake beside me, although he didn’t seem any more alert than I did.

“Back porch.” Parker enunciated each word in slight exasperation. “Go, please!”

Thulu looked at me, and I told him what Parker had said. Thulu can read lips, but even with a night light the room was too dark.

Thulu threw off the sheet and we both ran from the room. I was briefly glad we’d been wearing PJs.

Heart pounding, I took a few precious seconds to check on our three year old son, Carter. His night light showed him blissfully unaware of anything. Whatever happy dreams he was having made him smile slightly in his sleep. I sighed in relief that he wasn’t having another of his nightmares.

Downstairs, Thulu had turned on the kitchen and porch lights. In spite of the panic moments before, none of the three people on the porch seemed frantic when I joined them.

Thulu looked relieved, Reo was on the floor, but seemed stoic, and Sloane knelt beside him, brow furrowed only slightly in concentration as he dealt with the wound.

My heart rate slowed down and my own fear started to slowly dissipate. My heart gradually dropped from my throat back to its accustomed place in my chest. Still my hands were shaking, and I felt the slight chill from outside. The porch was screened in, and the late August day had been hot, but the night brought a cool breeze that made its way along my arms.

The scent of flowers from the backyard didn’t quite mask the smell of the blood that pooled on the porch floor around Reo. Sloane, his partner and an elf, had already removed Reo’s jacket and shirt. A bullet lay on the floor, and I could see the shoulder wound was already healing and closing up. In a few moments, only the blood would remain as evidence that he’d been shot.

Reo's face was white. The strain showed around his brown eyes and his handsome face had the sheen of sweat on it.  His short brown hair that was usually spiked, lay damp and flat against his head, but he gave me a shaky smile.

“Bastard ruined my favorite jacket.”

Praise for Portals
"Juggling angels, psychics, and a myriad of other magical folk (and their problems), Thulu and La Fi return in Portals to find a kidnapping victim, and maybe just save the universe as a side job. Maer Wilson does a beautiful job of painting their world, weaving a mystery, and sprinkling on a touch of humor in her sophomore fantasy. Such a fun escape!" —LynDee Walker, bestselling author of the Headlines in High Heels Mysteries.

Praise for Relics
"'Relics' is a powerful read which will challenge long-held perceptions of good vs. evil and Light vs. Dark well after the book is finished." Diane M. Haynes, author of Rift Healer, YA finalist in the Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence.

"In Relics, author Maer Wilson takes everything you think you know about the creatures of the fantasy world and twists it around to create a unique and engaging story."  Constance Philips, author of Resurrecting Harry and Fairyproof.

Official Cover Reveal - Dylan and Jen: a My Once and Future Love Revisited story

WIP Wednesday

I first talked about this story here.

Now see the official cover!

Pretty, no?

This will be on Amazon by Christmas Day. It's a short I'm still working on (due to some real-life delays out of my control), so I can't give the exact date, but I'm hustlin' to release it ASAP. ETA: Story is at 9628 words now. It'll reach 10,000 before it's done. 4 chapters. Releasing by Christmas Day 2013.

Here's a little excerpt:

December 2013

It’d been five days and Jen hadn’t called, yet.  Dylan couldn’t get her out of his head or his dreams, and it was driving him crazy wondering if she regretted their time together, or was merely busy.  They didn’t know much about each other, of course, but the girl was already in his blood.  His favorite high.  He knew if she’d only see him again, they could create something fantastic.
For Christmas, he went over to Jake and Beth’s house.  When it turned out he was the only guy there without a date besides her father, it hit him that maybe he should’ve stayed on the mountain at least another day.  He hadn’t thought about having a girlfriend since his ex broke his heart years ago, but now…surrounded by friends with serious relationships, he realized it was time.  He wanted it.  He wanted to love again.

This is Dylan.

I mentioned the Christmas-theme short story I'm working on. (Currently 8520 words.) Here's a preview of what the cover could look like. I still have to decide on a title, but I just had to share.

Isn't he yummy?

Writing today (My Once and Future Love Revisited series)

1st edit on the Xmas story in July took it from 8350 words to 7985.

Working on this again today. It's now at 8418 words. Converted POVs, and then have written some new stuff.

433 words this afternoon.

This fits into my contemporary series. One of the band members (Dylan) is getting a girl.

I didn't think I'd have time to work on it, but I'm done with NaNo, and Tech Guy's dad slept in today, so I got to start.

Not sure how long the story will be, but not very. Just meant to be something sweet and hot for the holidays. It DOES contain a spoiler for Beth and Jacob's last book, though.

See a picture of Dylan here.

KISSED excerpt - The First Kiss. My Once and Future Love Revisited #1

Here's a scene from KISSED, Jacob and Beth's first kiss:

A warm hand snuck under his shirt, then she nuzzled his neck again.  “Uh, Beth, what are you doing?”
She straddled his leg and nibbled his throat.  “What does it feel like?”  Two hands explored his abs.
He felt his body responding to her attentions and grabbed her shoulders to push her back.  “Sweetheart, you’re drunk.”
She smiled.  “Feel fine.”  Her fingers tickled his sides.  “Feel good, actually.”
“Beth—”
She kissed him, then put her finger on his lips.  “You talk too much.”
Trapped between her and the guitar, he couldn’t really move, and she was persistent in being naughty.  She trailed hot, wet kisses up to his ear, then flicked the lobe with her tongue and sucked it into her mouth, her teeth applying light pressure.  His hips arched off the seat as a jolt of electricity and blood went straight to his groin.
“Playin’ with fire, love.”
He felt her grin.
“Good.”  One of those sneaky hands slipped under his shirt again.  “Can’t tell me you don’t like it.”
True enough, but it wasn’t right.  He put his hands on her hips to push her away, then clenched his fingers when she bit his ear again.
“Beth—”
She cut off his complaint with another kiss, plunging her tongue in his mouth.
The cab stopped and the cabbie announced the fare owed.
Beth pulled away, grinning while Jacob fumbled for his wallet.  He shoved a few bills at the man and opened the car door, grateful for the cooler summer air to calm his hormones.  She wrapped her arms around his waist as he slung his guitar case on his shoulder.
One of her hands slid in his back pocket.  He jumped.  She smirked up at him, mischief in her eyes.  “Quit that. I need to unlock the door.”  The door to the street was locked after dark except to residents.
“Hurry up, then.”
He turned his key in the lock and opened the door for her.  It locked automatically again once they were inside.  He slammed her against the wall and kissed her hard enough to bruise, hoping to scare her into backing off.  “That what you want?” he spat.
She stared at him, then grabbed his head and kissed him back, wrapping her long arms around his neck and curling her leg around his hip.  Part of him thought you’re resisting this, why?  She kissed like he was her favorite treat and she was going to gorge herself on him.
Sod it—he picked her up, her legs wrapping around his waist, and carried her into the stairwell to press her against the wall.  He let the guitar case slide carefully to the floor.  Snogging his best friend was the last thing he expected to do tonight, but he couldn’t deny it was a bloody good time.  The cock-stand in his jeans was hard enough to hurt.  Couldn’t remember the last time he’d been this turned on.
Or wanted this much.
She clung to him like to a life preserver, one hand grasping the back of his shirt, the other tugging on the hair at the base of his skull each time he did something she liked.  He pressed his hips into her center, seeking pressure for some relief.  She squeaked and pressed back.
Oh god
His southern brain took over, dry-humping moans out of his girl that echoed up the stairwell.  He slid his hands under her ass to support her weight and give him greater leverage.  She sucked his tongue numb, but he didn’t care.
“Jacob…”  Shiny eyes and lips swollen from kisses.  Gorgeous.
“Upstairs?” he asked.
She nodded.  He let her down, picked up the guitar, and grabbed her hand.  They ran up to his flat.  Keys in the lock, knob twisted, and they were inside.  He pressed her against the door, unable to resist her lips.
She walked him backward to the futon and pushed him down, straddling his lap.  His hands slid under the back of her top.  God, her skin was soft.  They parted for air and he hiked the tank over her head and dropped it on the floor, then kissed and nibbled her neck, making a path over her collarbone and—
A charm on a delicate chain.
Beth’s graduation gift.
His best friend, barely out of high school and barely eighteen.
God, what am I doing?
Any other girl, and they’d be racing to his bedroom to get naked right now, but this was Bethie.  Sure, they’d have a night of fun, but then would come the sober harsh light of day and things would never be the same.
Jacob needed to regain control.

Blog Hop Interview - Tag!

Blog Hop Interview

I was tagged for this blog post by Sotia Lazu.

What are you working on right now?
Secret project. And what seems like forever, but Jacob/Beth's last book. Don't even go into my WIP folders.....too many stories.

How does it differ from other works in its genre?
Jacob/Beth - It's the HEA of a romance series featuring one couple. A saga.

Why do you write what you do?
It's what's in my head. If I wrote like someone else, I'd be someone else. Each writer has a voice. My main goal/style is realism. I don't believe in love at first sight - that's attraction. Love comes from getting to know someone.

How does your writing process work?
Seat of the pants. I get an idea - a scene, a premise, two characters - and just start. If it's a romance, then the goal is the couple together at the end. If it's fantasy, then my hero(ine) has to defeat the bad guy. Then it comes as it's meant to. Probably a boring answer, but I ain't fancy.

I wouldn't know who else to tag, so I'm not passing this on, but feel free to run with it if you're inspired.

Carla Krae Q&A

Interview with Carla Krae

When did you decide to become a writer?
It wasn't a planned-ahead choice. Creative writing gave me a complete mental block in school until a class my senior year of high school. I could do a short story based on prompts.

I didn't write until 2005, though. When a TV show I loved went off the air in 2003, I read a lot of fanfic to get my fix, and ended up inspired to do my own story to give my favorite character a happy ending that didn't get one in canon. That spawned over 200,000 words from May - Dec. '05.

I didn't get my first original idea for a story until 2006. That story is still a WIP. Beth and Jacob were born May 13, 2007, and it took me years to finish a first draft. Lots of learning and failing and learning more.

I knew writers that started self-publishing in 2007, but I didn't jump in myself until March 2010. I'm glad I made the decision and now wish I'd started even sooner.

What made you decide to write a book about Beth and Jacob?
The first scene I ever wrote for Beth in 2007 was her dream in the hospital. That whole dream was inspired by an episode of "Supernatural" where Dean is poisoned by a djinn and sees an alternate happier life than his real one. He chooses to leave the dream (the djinn's power) because he knows it's too good to be true.

It got me thinking about a character who was offered a second chance by seeing what their life could've been if they chose differently in the past - or finally acted on making their dreams come true.

Beth was an introverted nerd, Jacob was a spoiled rockstar, and Beth's mother's circumstances was the same. Those were the earliest elements of the story. The first draft started on the day before Beth's accident when Jacob is being difficult. I knew they had back story to high school, but I didn't start writing their past until 2010. Everything grew from there, and the series still isn't done, LOL.

As for Jacob's music career, I'm both a music fan and trained vocalist, so it was something I felt I had enough expertise to write. I was a performer for most of my life, so I know exactly how he feels on stage.

Did you have to do a lot of research to write your books?
More than people probably realize. A lot of research has gone into the My Once and Future Love series. Some of it is just to help with inspiration and other parts have been to get details perfectly correct.

What motivated you to become an indie author?
The control and flexibility. I like being an entrepreneur. My parents both ran home businesses at one point, so it's a natural thought process for me, and I've always been independent. My family said my first full sentence was, "I can do it myself!"

I'm grateful for having a few author friends that started self-publishing in 2007 to watch and learn from. That let me know this was possible in the first place.

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When I've affected a reader emotionally with my words. If they tell me I made them laugh or cry, that makes my day.

What do your fans mean to you?
A lot! They pay my bills.

What are you working on next?
The final story for Beth and Jacob.

What is your writing process?
Butt in chair. I'm what writers call a "pantser" - writing by the seat of my pants. I have an end goal in mind, but I don't outline. I don't think that way, and trying to impose too much structure on my work just blocks the words.

And I require quiet. No music. No voices in the background. Nothing but the subtle hum of computers and the AC.

What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Offering a free book. I'll always have at least one title permanently free. It's the best way to get people to sample your work and want more.

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Watching TV. Spending time with Tech Guy, my other half. Talking to friends online. I'm part of 3 very active writer communities, so I spend a lot of time there, too.

Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Nope. I started reading at age 2 and don't remember that far back. My mother was a teacher, so reading was important in our house.

I can say that one of my favorite early books was a book on dinosaurs. I wanted to be a paleontologist for several of my formative years.

What do you read for pleasure?
Paranormal romance and urban fantasy, mostly. I pounce on new Dresden Files books.

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Born and raised in Southern California. Many of my stories are based here because I know it best.

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Breakfast. I'm hungry!

Describe your desk
It's black/brown. "Espresso." I have a Samsung 23" widescreen monitor in front of me in the center. The desk has a drawer and cabinet built in to my right. My computer case sits on the left edge. 2 speakers and a sub sit behind the monitor.

I type on a Saitek keyboard. They're marketed to gamers, which means it puts up with abuse and they therefore last a long time for me. It glows blue under the keys.

My mouse is on my right. It's a Razer Diamondback that also has a blue glow.

My computer is also black with blue lights inside it. Blue is my favorite color and it's easy to find computer parts in black to coordinate, so there you go.

WIP Wednesday - Book 3 Update

ETA: There is a discussion thread for this book at Goodreads.

Haven't updated you all on MOaFL Book 3 progress in a while, so I thought I'd do so now.

Current word total - 32,744. That puts us 5 pages into chapter 10, so far. ETA: 32,848.

I had planned to work on adding significantly to Book 3 between 7/16 and 8/6, but some challenges have popped up - first was a housemate's unannounced vacation time (that they always spend at home) and second is a health issue with Tech Guy that might require multiple doctor visits. My personal deadlines tend to be cursed (you've picked up on that if you've read this blog for a couple years), so I really shouldn't have made plans even in my own head, but that's where we are now.

If you'd like to read early sample versions of chapters one - nine, they're available here. ETA: 10 Part One.

I consider getting to a full-length novel as  at least 70,000 words, so we have a ways to go, although I have pre-written material I haven't inserted, yet (over 13,000 words). Probably 24,000 new words minimum to write still.

When this book is finally ready, it'll get a big release and I still remember I owe the entrants of the Turn the Page Goodreads event a free copy of Book 3. You will be contacted when it's released. I'm dreadfully sorry for the long wait.

Any questions? I think that's all the news on this book I have right now, but feel free to post a comment.

Thanks,

Working.....

I don't post on this blog unless I have something worth more than a few lines to say, but you can keep up with more up-to-the-minute updates on Facebook. Or Twitter.

Today's update is:

Creating more work for myself. Affects 2014 more than 2013. At this moment, I can't say if I'll have a book release in 2013 or not. Life is crazy this summer. And hot!
