Phantom of the Opera turns 40!

Phantom just turned 40!

The debut was 9 October 1986 in Her Majesty's Theatre, London.

I just learned about the 40th today from Instagram randomly showing posts in my feed from an anniversary celebration last night with Michael and Sarah and Andrew Lloyd Weber.

If you go to my IG and look in the Stories, I linked to a few videos.

Phantom of the Opera made me the singer I am. My 7th grade choir teacher took us to see it Fall 1989 at the Ahmanson Theatre in LA. I bought the Highlights tape at the souvenir booth and played it incessantly until I got the full score double-tape set as a gift.

I was 12 in 1989 and singing along with PotO took my voice from a girl’s to a young woman’s. When we performed some of the songs later in spring, I was the only one with the range to hit the high notes in “Masquerade”.

Singing "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" as a solo got me a lot of surprised praise from the parents in the audience. They couldn't believe my voice came from me.

(I was 4'10" or so at the time.)

My choir teachers would come to rely on me for pitch and ability, and my range reached 4 octave plus 5 notes by age 15.

When my junior high choir teacher was retiring, my high school teacher set up a commemorative moment at our concert and all of us who had her could perform for her. I sang "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" as a senior.

Mrs. Reynolds passed in 2022.

I had intended to become a Marine Biologist, but the math reqs for that degree were beyond my brain, so I went to college as a Vocal Performance major.

All because of falling in love with Phantom.

I wrote in 2023 about the closing on Broadway after 35 years.

I was raised to be an elite socialite, the prize trophy on a wealthy man’s arm—not a small bed and breakfast owner’s wife in the mountains.

Shane is the small-town guy I never should’ve hooked up with more than once.

My first kiss. The first to touch me. The one I gave my body to in his old truck.

It should’ve stayed merely physical, but visiting his B&B each July is my escape from a life of duties and expectations my Bel Air parents drummed into my head.

One week a year of carnal bliss.

Shane always tries to convince me to stay longer (with orgasms), but I think we’re on the same page—friends with really good benefits and nothing more.

Until he says he loves me.

And he wants me to make a choice—give him a real chance, or we’re done.

I can’t. We can’t.

I’m supposed to find a suitable husband, not shack up with a hot country boy in the middle of Nowheresville, Colorado!

Even as I try to convince him we’re too different, I’m really afraid he won’t want me long if I take the leap and he’s stuck with me every day. I’ve worn a mask to survive in L.A.’s high society my whole life and my façade hides a mess of anxieties and self doubt.

My parents’ affection always came with conditions, after all.

Can I summon the courage to risk losing everything I’ve been to take a chance on love?

The Neighbor's Flirtatious Glances releases 8/18/2026!

 Releasing next Tuesday!

The Neighbor's Flirtatious Glances

When my roommate kicks me out in favor of her cousin, a two-month cat-sitting gig seems like the perfect opportunity to earn the down payment for my own apartment.

Then Mr. No-Shirt moves in next door.

Suddenly, the ocean view isn't the most captivating scenery out the window.

Mr. No-Shirt turns out to be thirty-eight-year-old Mackenzie Beckett, a chiseled man thirteen years my senior.

I should say no to his dinner invitation, but something about my gorgeous neighbor has drawn me to him since the first time our eyes met.

Which is anything but practical—I’m only in town eight weeks, Mac is way too old for me, and I have goals that require my focus, not a boyfriend! Yet, the more time I spend with him, the easier it is to forget all the reasons this shouldn’t work.

Is this budding romance a situationship, or the start of lasting love?

This story is intended for readers 18 and over due to adult language, sexual content, and adult situations.

The Neighbor's Flirtatious Glances:
*Age gap
*Slow burn
*He falls first
*A cat who may or may not be matchmaking
*Beach town setting
*See each other through windows before meeting
*No third act breakup
