Officially announcing that The Sanctuary War series is over. I'm not publishing Becoming Seven or anything else in it and Compelled has been pulled offline. With all the drama of the past week, I just can't do this stuff justice like I've wanted to for years. Not as Carla Krae.

Here's a scene from KISSED, Jacob and Beth's first kiss:

A warm hand snuck under his shirt, then she nuzzled his neck again.  “Uh, Beth, what are you doing?”

She straddled his leg and nibbled his throat.  “What does it feel like?”  Two hands explored his abs.

He felt his body responding to her attentions and grabbed her shoulders to push her back.  “Sweetheart, you’re drunk.”

She smiled.  “Feel fine.”  Her fingers tickled his sides.  “Feel good, actually.”

“Beth—”

She kissed him, then put her finger on his lips.  “You talk too much.”

Trapped between her and the guitar, he couldn’t really move, and she was persistent in being naughty.  She trailed hot, wet kisses up to his ear, then flicked the lobe with her tongue and sucked it into her mouth, her teeth applying light pressure.  His hips arched off the seat as a jolt of electricity and blood went straight to his groin.

“Playin’ with fire, love.” 

He felt her grin.

“Good.”  One of those sneaky hands slipped under his shirt again.  “Can’t tell me you don’t like it.”

True enough, but it wasn’t right.  He put his hands on her hips to push her away, then clenched his fingers when she bit his ear again.

“Beth—”

She cut off his complaint with another kiss, plunging her tongue in his mouth. 

The cab stopped and the cabbie announced the fare owed. 

Beth pulled away, grinning while Jacob fumbled for his wallet.  He shoved a few bills at the man and opened the car door, grateful for the cooler summer air to calm his hormones.  She wrapped her arms around his waist as he slung his guitar case on his shoulder.

One of her hands slid in his back pocket.  He jumped.  She smirked up at him, mischief in her eyes.  “Quit that. I need to unlock the door.”  The door to the street was locked after dark except to residents.

“Hurry up, then.”

He turned his key in the lock and opened the door for her.  It locked automatically again once they were inside.  He slammed her against the wall and kissed her hard enough to bruise, hoping to scare her into backing off.  “That what you want?” he spat.

She stared at him, then grabbed his head and kissed him back, wrapping her long arms around his neck and curling her leg around his hip.  Part of him thought you’re resisting this, why?  She kissed like he was her favorite treat and she was going to gorge herself on him.

Sod it—he picked her up, her legs wrapping around his waist, and carried her into the stairwell to press her against the wall.  He let the guitar case slide carefully to the floor.  Snogging his best friend was the last thing he expected to do tonight, but he couldn’t deny it was a bloody good time.  The cock-stand in his jeans was hard enough to hurt.  Couldn’t remember the last time he’d been this turned on.

Or wanted this much. 

She clung to him like to a life preserver, one hand grasping the back of his shirt, the other tugging on the hair at the base of his skull each time he did something she liked.  He pressed his hips into her center, seeking pressure for some relief.  She squeaked and pressed back.

Oh god…

His southern brain took over, dry-humping moans out of his girl that echoed up the stairwell.  He slid his hands under her ass to support her weight and give him greater leverage.  She sucked his tongue numb, but he didn’t care. 

“Jacob…”  Shiny eyes and lips swollen from kisses.  Gorgeous.

“Upstairs?” he asked.

She nodded.  He let her down, picked up the guitar, and grabbed her hand.  They ran up to his flat.  Keys in the lock, knob twisted, and they were inside.  He pressed her against the door, unable to resist her lips.

She walked him backward to the futon and pushed him down, straddling his lap.  His hands slid under the back of her top.  God, her skin was soft.  They parted for air and he hiked the tank over her head and dropped it on the floor, then kissed and nibbled her neck, making a path over her collarbone and—

A charm on a delicate chain. 

Beth’s graduation gift. 

His best friend, barely out of high school and barely eighteen.

God, what am I doing?

Any other girl, and they’d be racing to his bedroom to get naked right now, but this was Bethie.  Sure, they’d have a night of fun, but then would come the sober harsh light of day and things would never be the same. 

Jacob needed to regain control.

Wait, Mom was here?  Alive?  How?  “My mom?” she repeated in a daze.  Had I entered a parallel universe and traded places with a luckier Beth?

“Yeah…you gonna repeat everything I say all day?” he teased.

“Oh, shut up.”  She blushed. “No… My mom…she’d be home right now?”

“Probably… Are you sure you’re alright?” His brow furrowed in concern.

She smiled, smoothing the lines in his forehead away with her fingers. He leaned into her touch. It was such a couple-y reaction. “Yeah… You’ll be okay alone…with the baby?”

He rolled his eyes. “Of course I will. Been doin’ this dad thing a while, haven’t I? Besides, she’s a little angel.” 

She smirked knowingly. “Uh-huh… She has your genes, so I kinda doubt that one.”

He laughed while she carried the girl up to her room.

“I just want to touch base with Mom.”

“Okay.”

“I promise not to take too long.”

He waved her off. “Sure, sure…we’ll be fine. Go!”

She pranced out the door, flashing him a smile on her way out, and was relieved to find her same car in the garage.  Pulling out onto their street, she realized she didn’t know where she was. “Well, there’s no time like the present to explore,” she muttered.  The address book in her purse indicated her parents still lived in the same house, so getting there was easy once she found a street sign she was familiar with.  She pulled up to the house, palms sweating from nerves.  It’d been seven years since she saw her mother alive.

“I can do this, it’s my mom. God, it’s my mom…”

She stood at the door for several minutes talking herself into ringing the bell, then finally got the courage to push the button and heard footsteps immediately.

Mom opened the door.  “Beth? What a pleasant surprise! Is my gorgeous granddaughter with you?”

I’m not gonna cry, I’m not gonna cry… “Hi, Mom. Uh, no, it’s only me… Is Daddy home?”

Her mother smiled and stepped back to welcome her inside.  “Not today. He’s on a buying trip. What’s on your mind, sweetie?”

Could never hide anything from you, Mom, could I?  “I…” God, she looked wonderful, just like before she got sick.  “I wanted to see you. I…had this dream, and, uh…something bad happened to you, and…”

She enveloped Beth in a tight hug.  “Oh, honey… I’m sorry you’re upset. I’m fine, though, see?” she said with gentle reassurance.  “You want some iced tea? We can sit in the den and you can tell me about your dream.”

“Um, I’d rather just talk to you…Mom. It was only a dream. So… What’s new?” God, if only this was real…

Her mother chuckled as she poured tea into two glasses.  “Since last week? Not much, dear. I developed those photos we took at the park, though. I can’t believe Allison is coming up on another birthday.”

“Mm. She woke me up today with a very loud ‘Mommy!’ I still don’t think I’m quite used to it.”  No lie, there, since I really haven’t been a mother before!

Mom smiled knowingly, handing her the glass.  “Just wait until she’s giving you hell as a teenager. You’ll be cursing her name,” she teased.

“Is that how you were with Andrew?”

“Frequently. He was like that husband of yours back when, but worse. I don’t know how many times your father wanted to strangle Andrew for getting into too much mischief. And you were just the opposite. We could hardly get you to leave the house!”

“Yeah, yeah…but I ended up following in your footsteps, though…in photography?”  Okay, so she was fishing, but how else was she going to learn why this-world’s-Beth chose a different career path?

“You did. I wasn’t so sure about the subject—taking celebrity photos—but you have a real knack for bringing the person’s soul through the lens. Art is art, as they say…and it helped you reel in Jake, too.”

“I can’t believe he got you to call him ‘Jake’.”

“Well, he’s an adult, now. Just like I don’t call you Elizabeth anymore. Children eventually choose their own names, as you’ll find out soon enough. Are you starting to miss the work?”

“Funny you ask… Jacob asked me the same thing this morning. I don’t know…the quiet life is pretty appealing,” Beth said.  “And they might not want me back. There’s always someone waiting to fill your place.”

“Well, it’s up to you, of course. I have a feeling you’d find a niche soon enough, though.”  Mom stood and took her hand.  “Come on, I’ll show you those prints.”

She followed into what used to be her brother’s bedroom.  The window had been blacked out to turn the space into a dark room.  Mom flipped on the regular light switch, illuminating the dry photos hanging up.

Beth walked down the line, impressed.  “You took some great shots, Mom. Allison looks beautiful.”  The little girl looked like Jacob, but had her fair coloring.

“Oh, no, honey. These are yours. I told you, you have a gift. Has it been so long that you’ve forgotten?” she teased.

She blushed.  “I guess I haven’t thought about it.”  In real life, she only picked up a camera when she was asked to, and never any of the equipment she inherited from Mom.  “And you were always so amazing. I mean, you’ve had gallery showings and sold your work! I just make rich people look pretty.”

She guessed.

Mom squeezed her shoulders with affection.  “You’re being too modest, sweetheart. Look at these. You took them with a mother’s love and they’re gorgeous. Now, let’s get these collected so you can take them home. I’d love to spend the day chatting, but I have a luncheon to go to.”

“Oh.”  Beth tried not to sound too disappointed.  “Okay.”  Even in her head, there was never enough time with her mother.  She had so many questions still.  They put the photos into an envelope, which she slid into her purse.

They hugged at the door, Beth trying to memorize every feature.  She held on a bit longer than usual, wanting to be able to recall the scent of her mother’s hair, the healthy glow to her face, the feel of her warm arms when they gave you a hug.  Then it was time to leave.

She cried silent tears driving back to the house.

This is My Once and Future Love Revisited novella #3. Releases February 2, 2014 - barring any unforeseen delays.

This part of Jacob and Beth's story is really growing.  

I hope I've sufficiently addressed some people's criticisms of Beth so far. I won't make her a different person, but I hope I've made her thoughts easier to understand. Also, Jacob has flaws, and they're not being glossed over. This book is where he is at his worst. This part of the story always had that, but I'm not sure people understood that like they should before.

I hope this book will be well-received. I think it'll be worth it for readers who own MOaFL to pick up FORGIVEN when it's released. I've added over 2000 words so far and I'm not done, yet. I haven't changed the big points, but this is getting fleshed out with more characters interacting with them (and stuff). Andrew, Darcy, and Nathan all get more "screen time" in the revised series. 

No cover art yet, or I'd include it with this post. It's going to fit well with KISSED and BETRAYED.

Thank you for supporting these characters. After FORGIVEN is done, I'm on to LOVED, the last novella before the final novel.

For supernatural detectives Thulu and La Fi, “normal” is a relative term. La Fi is a medium, Thulu is a finder, and their usual clients are already dead.

But when their friend Reo is shot, and a group of stranded angels show up at their house for help to find a missing child, things are striking too close to home.

And now the portals that let the magical races return to Earth have started opening on their own.

With trips off-world, a kidnapped psychic and changes to their own abilities, Thulu and La Fi are hit with a lot more than they usually handle. Of course, their magical friends are there to help, but even they may not be enough to save an increasingly unstable Earth.

Portals is the sequel to Relics and is Book 2 in The Thulukan Chronicles.

Excerpt from Portals

That night Parker had popped in to wake us at two in the morning to tell us our best friend, Reo, had been shot. The young ghost was distraught and panicked.

“They're on the back porch! You have to go help.”

“Where is he?” I asked groggily, as I jumped out of bed.

Thulu was instantly awake beside me, although he didn’t seem any more alert than I did.

“Back porch.” Parker enunciated each word in slight exasperation. “Go, please!”

Thulu looked at me, and I told him what Parker had said. Thulu can read lips, but even with a night light the room was too dark.

Thulu threw off the sheet and we both ran from the room. I was briefly glad we’d been wearing PJs.

Heart pounding, I took a few precious seconds to check on our three year old son, Carter. His night light showed him blissfully unaware of anything. Whatever happy dreams he was having made him smile slightly in his sleep. I sighed in relief that he wasn’t having another of his nightmares.

Downstairs, Thulu had turned on the kitchen and porch lights. In spite of the panic moments before, none of the three people on the porch seemed frantic when I joined them.

Thulu looked relieved, Reo was on the floor, but seemed stoic, and Sloane knelt beside him, brow furrowed only slightly in concentration as he dealt with the wound.

My heart rate slowed down and my own fear started to slowly dissipate. My heart gradually dropped from my throat back to its accustomed place in my chest. Still my hands were shaking, and I felt the slight chill from outside. The porch was screened in, and the late August day had been hot, but the night brought a cool breeze that made its way along my arms.

The scent of flowers from the backyard didn’t quite mask the smell of the blood that pooled on the porch floor around Reo. Sloane, his partner and an elf, had already removed Reo’s jacket and shirt. A bullet lay on the floor, and I could see the shoulder wound was already healing and closing up. In a few moments, only the blood would remain as evidence that he’d been shot.

Reo's face was white. The strain showed around his brown eyes and his handsome face had the sheen of sweat on it.  His short brown hair that was usually spiked, lay damp and flat against his head, but he gave me a shaky smile.

“Bastard ruined my favorite jacket.”
