Beth and Jacob were best friends until one kiss ignited chemistry and passion neither could ignore. The tender long-distance relationship falls apart when Beth believes Jacob betrayed her the same day she finds out her mother's cancer is back.

Years after their attempt at dating crashed and burned, Beth works for rock-star Jacob as his personal assistant. When a car accident sidelines her with weeks of recovery, the truth comes out about why she pushed him out of her life and she realizes she made a terrible mistake. Can they get past all the pain they caused each other, or is a second chance doomed from the start?

Released May 13th, 2011. This book contains a "happy for now" ending. The sequel and conclusion is coming in 2012.

December...

How's everybody's holiday prep going?

Around my own shopping and decorating, I'm going to try to get another shorter story out by the end of the year. My shoulder's easing with rest, though I could still use a good massage on that side.

NaNoWriMo Ends Today

50,138. The book isn't done, yet, at all, but NaNo is - which I'm grateful for! It's been a sucky November real life-wise and I'm glad to see the door closed on it.

When will I finish the book? Not sure. For now, my back and shoulder need treatment again, so I'll be resting and staying off the computer. And then, there's Christmas.

Thanks for the support on Facebook this month. It really helped. I love you guys.

Book Rec: New Historical Western Romance e-book by Lily Graison

The Lawman
Willow Creek, Book 1

On the run from her ex-lover, jilted by a no-show husband and now mistaken for a whore in the Diamond Back saloon, Abigail Thornton doesn’t think things can get any worse. That is until a single slap to a man’s face starts a barroom brawl that lands her in the last place she expected to be.

Town Marshal Morgan Avery wants nothing more than to wash away the trail-dust and sleep for a week, preferably with a soft, willing woman by his side. Instead, he gets Abigail Thornton – all one hundred pounds of her thrust at him seconds before a fist connects with his face. Breaking up the fight takes more effort than he wants to admit and when the last man falls he finds Abigail still standing and not looking the least bit contrite.

A night in the town jail would salve his wounded pride and then he will let her go. Or that was the plan. When morning comes he finds himself oddly reluctant to do so. Miss Thornton is hiding something and he aims to find out what, even if he has to bed her to do so. But will one night in her bed be enough?

Still working on NaNoWriMo word count. I'm a bit behind, but that can't be helped on a holiday week. Hopefully, the weekend will be productive.

By the way - Piracy is Wrong

ETA: MediaFire situation is resolved. Other links still to tackle.

I discovered a PDF version of A Reluctant Vampire on Media Fire this weekend.

Yeah, I know the story is free, but I do not authorize sharing my e-books on download sites.

Period.

It's in the copyright language on the first page of every book. And really? The story is FREE. Free to download in mulitple versions on Smashwords.com, plus B&N, Apple, and Amazon. It's ridiculous.

So, thanks to some disrespectful pirate, I now have to fight with Media Fire to get the book removed because so far, they've only sent me cut-and-paste responses to my requests, asking me to jump through hoops I've done twice so far.

Readers, if you see any of my books shared on any download site, please report it. While I support lending friends and relatives paperbacks and such, I absolutely cannot support the illegal sharing of my copyrighted work that denies me the fair compensation I work for. Writing is my job.

Tuesday Teaser - Birthday Girl

Choose to be the new girl in town at your own peril. I get now why Mom never lived farther than twenty minutes from the house she was born in all her life. I looked around my empty living room, the balloons in the corners mocking my solitude. The food on the kitchen table sat untouched, a chocolate cake still pristine in the center.

This was what happened when a girl sponsored her own birthday party.

Someone knocked on the front door. I checked my watch and greeted Marcy, my best friend. She shoved a present into my hands.

“Hi, Hattie, sorry I can’t stay, but I wanted to give you this so you wouldn’t think I forgot.” She smiled, ran back down the driveway to her Honda, waved, and zipped away. She’d been fifteen minutes late. We might be rethinking that friend title.

I placed the small gift on the table and put the food back in the refrigerator. Didn’t want to poison anyone, should they ever show up. I hadn’t invited a lot of people—there weren’t many I knew well enough yet to let into my home—but I’d put out a decent spread. There was even alcohol, and I didn’t drink.

After another half-hour, I gave up and turned the lights out in the living room, then cut a piece of cake for myself and stuck one candle in it.

“Happy friggin’ birthday to me.”

Thursday Thirteen - 13 sentences from my WIP file

Euphoria flowed through my body, and I collapsed on his chest. “See you next summer?” I said, breathing heavily. I started to get up and Mike grabbed my hips.

“Oh, no, you’re not getting away with that, Rae.” He rolled us so he was on top and thrust into my body.

My inner muscles spasmed, still affected by my climax. I glanced at the clock while he got his rocks off, noting I had an hour to get to the airport. The second orgasm surprised me.

He grinned. “Knew you had another in you.”

“Five today not enough for you? I’m going to miss my flight.”

Mike always did this on the day I left, dragging our time out to the last second.

Tuesday Teaser - How Bob and Celeste met

Celeste might’ve gone to the concert to see Jake Lindsey sing, but it was the lead guitarist Bob Thompson she couldn’t take her eyes off of. Now with a chance to meet him, she introduced herself.

“I think we should get to know each other.”

He took her offered hand, but didn’t shake it, holding it in his large grasp instead. “Oh? Why’s that?” he asked, smiling.

“Our best friends are gonna do the dating thing and there’ll be a lot of drama. If they’re going to drive us nuts, the least we can do is commiserate.”

He laughed, deep and throaty, and still hadn’t let go of her hand. “They do like to complicate life, don’t they? Tell you what, gorgeous…” He took a pen out of his pocket and started writing on her palm.

“What’s at that address?”

Bob finally released her hand. His eyes flicked down, then up, taking in her curvaceous form. “A good time. What else is there?”

It was her turn to laugh. “Not a damn thing.”

Saturday Snippet - Jacob and Beth

His scent floated up from the pillow, a mix of shampoo, cologne, and essential Jacob, the recipe not changing much since he was sixteen. Feeling needier than I wanted to be, I got up and tapped on the bathroom door with one finger, twice. He opened it and I wrapped my arms around him, burying my face in his neck.

“Just one more week,” he whispered in my ear. I nodded, rubbing the sides of our faces together, lifted my head, and our lips met.

We never did chaste kisses and this was no exception, my butt soon set on the counter and my legs wrapped around his hips. He hadn’t put on a shirt, yet, so my hands were exploring all that yummy skin while it was in reach.

A baby cried. I froze, then Jacob. My niece Sarah.

We heard doors open and close, then Darcy’s voice through the wall, soothing her daughter. I slid off the counter and reached for the door. After peeking into the hallway, I escaped to the kitchen.

Babies…it’s like they know.

Still, I’d thank her later. I didn’t want our first time together again to happen in my brother’s guest bathroom before my boyfriend flew away for a week.

Comments welcome.

Thursday Thirteen

13 sentences from Book 3:

New Year's Eve
Tokyo, Japan

The concert had been timed for the latest song to end a minute before midnight. The big screen behind Jake and the band showed the crowd as the camera panned over the audience. They screamed.

“Grab someone you love, and if you came alone, make a friend,” he said into the mike.

A timer popped up on the screen counting down the seconds.

Jacob dialed a number on his cell phone, then held it up to the shouting crowd.

“TEN…NINE…EIGHT…SEVEN…”

Her voice mail would pick up at this hour, but it didn’t matter.

“FIVE…FOUR…THREE…TWO…ONE!!!”

He held the phone’s microphone close to his lips to be heard over the celebrating crowd. “Happy New Year, baby. I’m comin’ home.”

Tuesday Teaser

Bob walked out of LAX to one of the waiting Town Cars, pulling his phone out of his pocket before he sat down inside.

“Home, sir?”

“Yeah, man.”

The driver put up the privacy screen and pulled out into traffic. Bob dialed a familiar number.

“Hello?”

“I’m leaving the airport. Be at my door,” he said, and hung up.

When he reached the floor of his apartment, she was there, wearing a trench coat and over-the-knee boots.

“Who do you think you are, hanging up on me?”

“You still came.” He switched his bag to his left hand and unlocked the door.

“Not yet.”

A little more from Book 3. Comments welcome.

Book 3 in Progress, and a little fangirling

The next Jacob/Beth story is being written. Current word count is 3105. Progress will go faster once I get to the pre-written material I have to edit (part of a previous incarnation of their book with a slightly different plot).

There will be a pause to read the next Dresden Files book as soon as I get my hands on it (offical release Tuesday). I've already read Jim's 5 sample chapters and OMG - so jealous of the fans at Comic Con this weekend that got to buy the book early. I know at least 2 people in the UK that got their book from Amazon already, grrrrr. If you have Ghost Story, don't spoil me! I'll have to thwap you.

On a sad note, Borders is being liquidated. Are you losing your local bookstore? Mine closed a few months ago when they were getting rid of the underperforming stores. It was nice to have one within walking distance for me, but oh well....stuck with the B&N across from the mall now.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2

Tech Guy had a recent work schedule change so he has Fridays off, so we went to the midnight show last night.

Saw it in 3D, but it's really not necessary for this movie. You won't miss out with regular ol' 2D.

Trailers included were Breaking Dawn part 1, Torchwood: Miracle Day, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (squee!), The Dark Knight Rises (double squee!), and Cowboys and Aliens (planning to see it).

DH part 2 is about 2 hours even. Everybody brought their A game. There were several lines for showings at our theater, probably at least 10, and our show was full except for the front row (way too close to a screen that large). The 3D glasses are actually Harry Potter edition little black frames. Cute.

Won't spoil the movie here. We had a really good time. I confess to not reading the book series, so I don't know how close it was to that. The audience cheered and clapped a lot, so the die-hards seemed to be pretty happy. If you get misty at all at movies, bring at least one tissue for this one.

Happy Friday, all.

Six Sentence Sunday

From the WIP:

He slid his hand under the edge of the shorts to caress my left leg. “Is there any pain?”
Don’t flinch, don’t flinch… “Nothing an aspirin can’t fix.”

His fingers traced the scar, feeling out the texture difference in my skin. “You don’t have to hide it from me, you know."

Comments welcome.

Saturday Snippet

I had a good week, so I'm feeling generous.

My pillow wiggled beneath me. “Bethie-love, I have to leave.”

I nuzzled into the crook of Jacob’s neck and mumbled, “Just five more minutes.”

“Gave you those ten minutes ago. Let me up.”

“Don’t wanna.” After nearly two months without my boyfriend, one day wasn’t enough, even if he did make it for Christmas.

He rolled us over on my brother’s deep sofa. “Gonna miss my flight if I don’t get up now.” He stood and tossed the blanket back over me. It was barely sunrise and cold in the living room.

Too early even for me, but since I wouldn’t have him home for a week, I watched him gather his clothes and toiletries and head for the hall bathroom. This tour had definitely put a crimp in the progress of our developing relationship. I questioned the intelligence of dating a rock star all the time. If not for all the history of thirteen years and loving him nearly as long, I’d say no way and not for me, but Jacob was Jacob—the only boy/man I’d ever wanted.

Which made the whole enterprise scary as hell.

Yes, there will be another Jacob/Beth book. :-)

Thursday Thirteen - 13 Must-Haves

1. Talking to Tech Guy. Even when he's away for a boy's weekend, I can't help calling at night.

2. My watch. I've worn one since I was itty-bitty and feel naked without it.

3. Rings. Same with the rings on each ring finger. They only come off when I shower. The left one is even formed like the joint of my finger because it's a little small.

4. Neutrogena lip balm. The basic stick. Wish they would carry it in stores again!

5. My allergy pill. Only thing that keeps my asthma away. And the sneezing.

6. Green Tea. I drink at least 3 mugs every day.

7. My computer.

8. Aveeno fragrance-free lotion. My hands started getting dry in my teens and I have to have a formula that doesn't set off my skin re: allergies.

9. Knowing where our kitties are. They can drive me nuts at times with the constant Mom!Mom!Mom! meowing because everything they want is a dire emergency.....but I love them. I worry when one of them doesn't come to greet me.

10. My best friends. Even though we're long-distance.

11. Chocolate. Do I need to explain? :-D

12. Memories. I'm one of those people who saves a lot of stuff because it will always bring up a memory.

13. A car. This is the one thing I don't have right now, and I miss driving all the time like you wouldn't believe. I put around 40,000 miles on my first car in just a few years.

What are your must-haves?

Thursday Thirteen

Thirteen first paragraphs of my WIPs:

1. Euphoria flowed through my body, and I collapsed on his chest.  “See you next summer?” I said, breathing heavily.  I started to get up and Mike grabbed my hips.

3. Brother Michael told me to stay in the root cellar until it was quiet.  Above, I heard the screams, then gurgles, of my fellow brethren.

4. My active imagination only mattered when it came to playing the piano.  I was a concert pianist, in demand, and traveling for the past year after losing my apartment.

5. Jacob unlocked the front door and walked inside. “Love? You home?” He closed the door and glanced in the kitchen to his right. Empty. “Beth?”

6. Beth changed for bed. She still felt shy undressing in front of him when it didn’t involve sex. “You’re staring again.”

7. I dodged the man-turned-werewolf, tucking into a roll, and—yuck—stood with dog poop stuck to my coat.  Couldn’t people clean up after their mutts in the park?

8. When the hospital called to say Mom had fallen and broken her hip, I wasn’t surprised.  The only remarkable thing about it was the time—before noon.  Had she started drinking early, or was she suffering the effects of the previous day?

9. Jason Cole + Holly Perry - I’d doodled it on a dozen class notes so far this semester.

10. My ability to choose a man sucked. I was with my first boyfriend ever for two years. It was bliss in the beginning. We were sickeningly lovey-dovey, finishing each other’s sentences and seeing each other every day. Then, he proposed.

11.
William Carlisle
Private Investigator
It was painted on the glass in my office door. The door that hadn’t opened to reveal a client in three months. You catch one beloved star cheating on his wife, and no one wants to work with you.

12. My pillow wiggled beneath me.  “Bethie-love, I have to leave.”

13. I finished writing the note inside my Christmas card to Mom, hoping it’d make up for missing Thanksgiving.  Amelia came back in the room and put her phone in her bag.

Okay, I cheated on #11, but those lines really need to go together.
#5 and #6 are from a couple drabbles I did last year set post My Once and Future Love.

I saw Star Wars in Concert on June 4th at the Hollywood Bowl

Anthony Daniels was an awesome narrator of the Star Wars story. He's done this performance several times over by now, but there wasn't the slightest bit of repetition fatigue.

The two shows, Friday and Saturday, were sold out, and it's really worth it for any fan. So far, these were the only dates for 2011, but I do hope they give cities that haven't had the chance to see it before a shot. Getting a DVD of it wouldn't come close to capturing the show.

I will say, though, merchandise - ouch! I got a program for $25 and they were selling t-shirts for $35. Not surprising, but still, yikes.

The lack of exhibit was a bummer (the Bowl doesn't have room for it), but once we got into the show, we weren't really thinking about it. We could see most of the video screen, except there is some kind of thing that hangs down the front of the arch of the Bowl and from our view, it was in front of a lot of faces in the video. We know all the scenes, of course, so we knew what we'd see, but if people were new then it probably wasn't good for them. The show was originally designed to play in arenas, so I'm not entirely sure why they picked the Bowl for this, but the sound was great. We did have fun...just not perfect fun. People in the center seats got a great show, and kids definitely seemed to enjoy it no matter where they were.
And the surprise?

John Williams came out at the end to conduct The Imperial March. JOHN WILLIAMS!!! It was at the very end of the concert, and Anthony Daniels gestures for us to sit and quiet down so he can tell us something. "We have a very special guest" and then it's John Williams. Crowd went freaking wild. A few people had already started to leave, and I'm like WTH five minutes is not going to get you out of the parking lot any faster. You can see a vid here.

Pretty good June birthday present, eh?

"Love Bites"

Anyone else watching the new show Love Bites on NBC? It's on Thursdays at 10pm ET/PT. As it says on the official site:

"Love Bites" is an hour-long romantic comedy anthology series featuring three loosely connected modern stories of love, sex, marriage and dating. Each of the multiple vignettes will involve an array of talented guest stars every week, and will illuminate the theme of love with a fresh, irreverent spin.

Anchoring the series and appearing in each episode are stars Becki Newton ("Ugly Betty") as Annie Matopoulos, a single New York City girl looking for "Mr. Right Now"; and Constance Zimmer ("Entourage") and Greg Grunberg ("Heroes") as Colleen and Judd Rouscher, a happily married Venice Beach couple.

Guest cast for the pilot episode includes Jennifer Love Hewitt ("Ghost Whisperer"), Craig Robinson (NBC's "The Office"), Kyle Howard ("My Boys"), Steve Howey ("Bride Wars"), Lindsay Price ("Eastwick"), Larry Wilmore ("The Daily Show"), Guillermo Diaz ("Mercy"), Krysten Ritter ("Breaking Bad"), David Giuntoli ("Privileged"), and Charlyne Yi ("Knocked Up").

Emmy Award-winning producer/director Marc Buckland ("My Name Is Earl") directed the pilot, and will serve as an executive producer. He's joined by executive producers Tracy Poust and Jon Kinnally ("Will & Grace," "Ugly Betty"), and Eric Fellner, Tim Bevan, and Shelley McCrory of Working Title Television. Emmy Award-winning writer/producer Cindy Chupack ("Sex And The City") is the creator, and will be a consulting producer on the series.

"Love Bites" is from Universal Media Studios and Working Title Television, which is a new division of Working Title Films (the UK production company behind such box office hits as "Love Actually," "Bridget Jones's Diary," and "Four Weddings and a Funeral").

As a romance writer, I love that each vignette ends on a happy ending. Also love the total geek acceptance, and me and Tech Guy have been laughing our asses off with the first two eps. Maseratis and banana bread have all-new meanings. If you haven't watched it--totally worth catching up. Great summer TV.

Cats are Funny

I have 2 male cats - one born in '99 and the other in '03. The younger one outweighs the older one by at least 5lbs, but he's not the boss.

He's actually a big coward, lol.

Anyway, the younger cat had claimed a box recently. He's been curled up in it every day for weeks and been a better-behaved kitty because of it - until this week. Our oldest and alpha cat decided he wanted the box.

At first, he'd just bat at the cat in the box to annoy him, get him to leave it.
Then, he started getting in it when the other cat left.
This week, they've done a bunch of wrestling again - dominance plays - and Alpha Cat is now sleeping in the box and has been all week.

My poor cowardly younger cat has been restless, like he doesn't know what to do with himself now his favorite place is no longer his. Once again, he's sleeping in the middle of walkways and being a general nuisance.

But I'm sure the dynamic will change again. :-)  Alpha Cat changes sleeping places every 2 weeks.

So, what's your funny pet story?

Tuesday, April 19, 2011

It's Tuesday and I feel fine.

Sorta. How was your Monday?

Pluses: I slept in, it was MUCH cooler than the weekend, and I watched new "Chuck" and "Gossip Girl".

Minuses: It was the one-year anniversary of my father's death, and I spent several hours on a project that wasn't panning out except in frustration.

In the greater scheme of the month, I'm very grateful for the fans that come to the Facebook page and leave me a note. They're virtual treats, cookies like chocolate chip, or Milanos. Mmmmm, Milanos.....
